The Gunters

Who were the Gunters?

The house is named after the Gunter family who built the property and lived there for about 150 years.

James Gunter bought the Priory and many of its lands in 1546. He was a landowner who made his money by speculating in buying monastic property. He built Priory House which would have sat at right angles to the surviving Tithe Barn. His grandson, Thomas Gunter I, built Plas Gunter Mansion around 1630 on land previously owned by his grandfather.

The house eventually passed to his son, Thomas Gunter II, a lawyer and Jesuit supporter. He was a leading recusant and took great risks to promote Catholicism during the turbulent years following the Civil War and Restoration. He created the chapel on the second floor.

Members of the Gunter family lived at Plas Gunter Mansion until around the mid to late eighteenth century. Anne Gunter went to London and founded a London based confectionery business, the Pot and Pineapple, with her husband, Italian pastry chef, Domenico Negri. Her nephew James Gunter, inherited it. The business enjoyed royal patronage and became known as Gunter's Tea Shop, surviving for several generations eventually closing in 1956.
